100+ synagogen in deutschland

Jews have been living in what is now Germany since the 4th century. Over the centuries, growing Jewish communities established synagoguesโ€”places of worship built to honor their Creator. These structures are often architecturally magnificent and unique. While some synagogues survived the war, many Jewish communities did not. After 1945, most synagogues that no longer had an active Jewish community were either sold or demolished.

โ€œ100+ Synagogues in Germanyโ€ proudly showcases the current state of German synagogue culture. This collection features preserved Jewish houses of worship that have stood for over a thousand years, those that have been repurposed to reflect Jewish heritage, and new synagogues built by revitalized communities.

“There are certainly encyclopedia-like works and architectural treatises on the subject, but the connection to the lived present has always been missing. Now it’s here!”
โ€”Central Archive for the History of the Jewish People, Jerusalem, Israel

“This book is a significant resource for understanding the resilience and diversity of Jewish communities in Germany.”
โ€”Dr. Joseph Cronin, Director Leo Baeck Institute London for the Study of German-Jewish History and Culture

“The book uses a more creative approach, with unusual angles or bold compositions. That is good for visual variety in a book of this scope. The use of color and new photographs makes this book potentially popular, unlike earlier essential books that focus on scholarly information with black-and-white historic images (e.g., Harold Hammer-Schenk’s classic study), so people of all ages from 8 years and upward will find it attractive. I will inform the librarian at NYU about this book, because more people than I need to see it, and look into it for family history, interesting touring, or good historical โ€” and current โ€” information. Many, many thanks โ€ฆ for producing the book.”
โ€”Prof. Dr. Carol Herselle Krinsky, New York University

“I never expected the book to be so comprehensive. The design is perfect! It looks like a monumental work of the century documenting a part of Jewish life in Germany. Congratulations!”
โ€”Dr. Heiner Rinne, Bremen
